Letter from Imam Alhaji Lukmon Kalejaiye

Masjid Bab-Salam has existed since 1994 as Coney Island Islamic Cultural Center and was incorporated in 1998 as Masjid Bab-Salam USA, Inc., Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York, under the spiritual guidance of Sheik Siraj Abubakar.

This center was established by a group of brothers who recognized the absence of a Masjid in Coney Island to serve the spiritual needs of an increasing population of Muslim families in Coney Island and its adjacent neighborhood. The objective of these brothers was to establish an inclusive place of worship for all Muslims, an educational center for all generations, and a hub for the dissemination of the religion of Islam. The community has experienced growth alongside the challenges posed by the frequent revocation of our tenement agreement, resulting in the Masjid being without a physical place of worship for approximately 18 months. The community continues conducting its activities by utilizing members' residences and storefronts for Jumat services, Ramadan programs, and student education. Alhamdulillah. On October 19, 2001, we acquired a three-story building near Coney Island Astroland and the Key Span minor league stadium to serve as a Masjid and Islamic center in Coney Island.

This permanent center serves the small community in this area and the cab drivers, vendors, store owners, employees, and people of every ethnic group. Apart from serving as a place of worship, The Masjid undertakes the following programs:

  1. Weekend Islamic School

  2. Youth Leadership Class

  3. Weekend Asalat / Dhikir group meetings

  4. Nikah Ceremonies

  5. Naming Ceremony for newborn babies

  6. Islamic Funeral services

  7. Islamic Library

  8. Food Pantry/Social support

  9. New revert support services

  10. Immigrant Support Services

Today graduation testifies to the work of the Masjid to provide Islamic education to our community and develop future leaders. At this school, students are not only learning how to read the Quran and study Hadith but are also prepared to take leadership roles in the future. They will be serving as an ambassador of Islam and community leaders.

We thank almighty Allah (SWT) and everyone who has given us their generous financial support that keeps us open for the cause of Allah (SWT). The Masjid continues to serve a very small community and struggling to meet our financial commitments to keep the Masjid operating fully as we intended. Our biggest challenge now is to pay off the balance on the building mortgage which is $630,000 only. Paying off this loan will save us from continuing to pay interest which is against the teaching of Islam (May Allah forgive us all). Given this, we are approaching you and asking you to extend your financial contributions to the Masjid fund. This Masjid desperately needs your generous donations. Please direct inquiries on how you can help the Masjid.
